We no longer fit into the system’s mould. Let us move towards a Humanist Revolution

Hundreds of thousands are camping out in Spain for the right to decent housing. Thousands of students in Germany are opposing attempts at conscription and militarization. Young people and trade unions are rebelling in France against plans to introduce further social cuts. The people are demanding the resignation of governments and a change of course in Serbia and Albania.

Across the world, millions of voices are calling for an end to genocide and war. The echo of the protests in the United States against despotism is still fresh, whilst in Africa the popular will is growing, demanding redress for centuries of colonialism and oppression.

The courageous defiance of Indian schoolchildren continues the line of the recent Generation Z uprisings in Nepal, Indonesia, East Timor, Peru, Madagascar, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and many other places against corruption, nepotism and a lack of opportunities.

Likewise, we recognize and greatly value all those grassroots initiatives which, while not yet having achieved the visibility and widespread reach of the aforementioned ones, are fostering greater public participation at the local level with the aim of becoming true models.

From the Politics and Geopolitics Thematic Table of the World Humanist Forum, we express our unequivocal solidarity with this renewed wave of transformation and stand behind the just demands of this global movement.

At the same time, we warn that, as has happened on other occasions, the system will attempt to silence, tone down and divert these attempts of change so that everything remains the same. Let us not fall into the trap of violence and resentment. This cannot be solved simply through superficial changes, decrees or short-term measures. It is a structural, systemic and universal crisis.

Let us not miss this opportunity. We must take a further step towards a worldwide Humanist Revolution.

Humanity has grown and, as at other times in history, is calling for profound change. Let us move forward globally, leaving behind all forms of violence and discrimination. Let us demand a world in which everyone can have place. Let us direct our efforts towards a Universal Human Nation. Let us dare to change ourselves too, and support the transformation we wish to see in the world through coherent personal and collective behaviour. Let us take a giant leap in history towards a humanity characterised by solidarity and compassion.

Change is possible and depends on human action! The time is now!
