International Basic Income Week 2026: “Secure Lives, Fearless Voices, True Democracy”

From 14 to 20 September 2026, activists around the world took part in the 19th International Basic Income Week, a self-organised and participatory initiative promoting an unconditional basic income for all.
This year's motto, "Basic Income: Secure Lives, Fearless Voices, True Democracy", was proposed by Jaanus Nurmoja from Estonia. It links economic security to democratic life: people who are not afraid of losing their livelihood are freer to speak, participate and take part in public decisions.
The week included a global photo action under the hashtag #countonbasicincome on 16 September, in which supporters shared images from their towns and cities, and the ninth International Basic Income Beer on 18 September, a synchronised meeting of local groups in cafés and bars for debate and outreach. In past editions, these gatherings have taken place in more than 80 cities.
The debate on basic income is advancing as automation, precarious work and inequality put traditional social protection systems under strain. For humanists, guaranteeing everyone the material conditions to live is a precondition for freedom, not a concession.
