Course in Nonviolent Journalism

Javier Tolcachier2 min read

In collaboration with the International Press Agency Pressenza, the Non-Violent Journalism Course has begun with a record number of 700 registered students from 28 countries. The subject has generated a great deal of interest amongst journalists and activists, particularly in Bangladesh and Kenya.
The course will run for a total of three months and addresses key issues for humanising communication, such as the promotion of non-violent practices and attitudes at grassroots level, as well as the identification and journalistic coverage of different situations of violence, alongside ways to overcome them. Furthermore, part of the sessions is dedicated to understanding the need for a shift in the communicator’s own perspective, as well as training in the tools required for applying this in everyday journalistic practice.
The work produced by the students may be published and disseminated via Pressenza, in collaboration with one of the newsrooms operating in the 10 languages in which the agency currently publishes its news.
Thanks to the initiative of one of the mentors, the course now has a theme song in English and Bangla.
The stated aim of the training is to continue promoting non-violent content across different cultures through journalists already active in various media outlets, whilst also fostering the establishment of new Pressenza newsrooms in different countries and regions.
